SmartICE supports the ice information needs of communities where we operate. We understand the importance of community engagement, and we develop and maintain strong relationships with each community in which we operate.
To build trust and foster community support, Community Management Committees are established in each SmartICE serviced community and have Elder, youth, and representatives from community organizations. These Committees document Inuit Quajimajatuqangit that has been passed down through generations and teach young hunters and ice users how to plan, prepare, identify, and test the sea ice for safety while traveling. By sharing their accumulated sea ice knowledge, the communities are enabling younger generations to adapt to unpredictable sea ice conditions caused by changing climate.
ST. JOHN’S: Our St. John’s office is the base of operations for equipment production and logistics, research and development, and the SmartICE administration team.
POND INLET: The site of its second system demonstration, Pond Inlet serves as the operational and training centre for SmartICE in Nunavut.
NAIN: The first of its kind, the Northern Production Centre opened 2019 and serves as the operational hub for SmartICE in Nunatsiavut. This is where we host our Employment Readiness and Technology Development Program and where Inuit youth build our SmartBUOY technology.
SmartICE is actively expanding partnerships with communities across the North. With a focus on co-designing local solutions, these sites represent new relationships and opportunities for our team to learn more about traditional knowledge and the unique needs of each community.
From coast to coast to coast, we acknowledge with respect the lands on which we work are the ancestral homelands and unceded territory of the Inuit, Métis, and First Nations people.
We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations as we move forward in collective healing, reconciliation, and collaboration.
SmartICE is actively engaging communities across the North about their ice information needs and our services.
